Gujarat government has released scholarship amount under Namo Lakshmi Yojana on 22nd October 2024. Under this scheme, female students studying in class 9th to 12th will get Rs. 50,000 financial assistance from the state government. With a provision of Rs. 1250 crore, Namo Laxmi Yojana aims to increase girls enrolment in classes 9th to 12th in schools.

The Namo Saraswati and Namo Laxmi scholarship schemes are boosting school enrolment and science stream uptake in Gujarat. Both these scholarships are disbursed through a real-time attendance tracking system. Amit Shah has distributed scholarships totalling Rs. 116 crore to over 10.85 lakh students in govt/govt-aided schools across classes 9 to 12 under Namo Laxmi and Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana schemes.

Namo Lakshmi scheme aims to reduce dropout rates among girls in higher secondary education. It benefits over 1.1 million female students across Gujarat. Girls in classes 9 and 10 receive Rs. 500 per month for 10 months and an additional Rs. 10,000 upon passing board exams, while those in classes 11 and 12 receive Rs. 750 per month with an extra Rs. 15,000 for successful 12th board results. Altogether, eligible students can obtain up to Rs. 50,000 over four years to support their education from classes 9 to 12, promoting continued education, self-reliance, and financial independence. This scheme is applicable to girls whose family income is less than Rs. 6 lakh per annum, said the release.

Eligibility Criteria under Namo Laxmi Scheme

All girls who have completed Class 8 and enrolled in Class 9 in government and aided schools will be covered under the scheme. However, for girls in private schools, the government has set a family income cap of Rs. 6 lakh per annum. It is worth noting that Namo Lakshmi Yojana will be available as an additional benefit to the students covered under Namo Saraswati Merit Scholarship.

Impact of Namo Lakshmi Yojana in Gujarat

Since launching, the Namo Laxmi scheme has led to a 6% increase in school enrolment among girls in classes 9 to 12 from 2023 to 2024. In addition to this, Namo Saraswati scheme has seen a 10% rise in students opting for science streams in classes 11 and 12. As of June 2024, Rs. 157 crore of the Rs. 1,250 crore budgeted for the Namo Laxmi scheme and Rs. 46 crore of the Rs. 250 crore set aside for the Namo Saraswati scheme have been disbursed.

Salient Features of Namo Lakshmi Yojana in Gujarat

  • Namo Lakshmi Scheme for girls studying in secondary and higher secondary schools of the state to complete their studies from class 9 to 12.
  • Under the Namo Lakshmi Scheme, each girl will get total assistance of Rs. 50,000/- by completing classes 9 to 12 in government, aided and private schools.
    • Rs. 10,000/- per annum for classes 9-10 (Rs. 500/- per month based on attendance × 10 and the remaining 50% will come into bank account by D.B.T after passing class 10 board exam).
    • Rs. 15,000/- per annum for classes 11-12 (Rs. 750/- per month based on attendance × 10 and the remaining 50% will come into bank account by D.B.T after passing class 12 board exam).
  • The scheme will enroll more girls in classes 9 to 12 as well as reduce the dropout rate of girls in these standards, help in their education and nutrition thereby empowering them.
  • An estimated 10 lakh girls studying in classes 9 to 12 in government, aided and private schools of the state will get the benefit of this scheme.
  • The eligibility of the benefits of Namo Lakshmi Yojana will be decided on the basis of the prescribed family income limit.
  • Under this scheme, an estimated expenditure of Rs. 1,250 crores has been estimated in the year 2024-25.

Namo Lakshmi Scheme in Gujarat Budget Speech 2024-25

Finance Minister presented Gujarat Budget 2024-2025 on 2 February 2024. While delivering the budget speech, FM announced to start 2 new schemes namely Namo Saraswati and Namo Lakshmi Yojana. While “Namo Saraswati Yojana” aims to encourage students to pursue science stream education, “Namo Laxmi Scheme” targets universal enrolment in secondary education by offering financial assistance to girls up to class 12th.

FM added “Under the Namo Lakshmi Yojana, adolescent girls studying in government, granted and private schools from classes 9 to 12 will be given Rs 50,000 over the four years – Rs 10,000 annually in classes 9 and 10, and Rs. 15,000 per year in classes 11 and 12 – to complete their education”.
